The Zoo

Soothing pictures on beige walls
Zombies walking through the halls
Shuffling along, staring at the ground
Brains bound, hope drowned

Sitting across from the one you love
Praying to something up above
to keep her safe from herself
To rid the desire to kill oneself

Channeling the fear that lingers in the air
feeling nothing but despair
for the friend you couldn’t protect
whose world you couldn’t correct

And the girl next door
who screams at the floor
fills you with fear
making you wish you could stay near

And with a hug and an “I love you”
you must leave her in this zoo
filled with guilt and pain
churning in your brain

Because you cant keep her safe.
Then the voice in your head whispers,
“You could be next.”
